Born to Color

COLOR. A word that instantly brings an image to anyone's mind when spoken. However muted or bright, subtle or widespread it may be, everyone utilizes color in their homes. However, there are some people in this world that simply ooze color. Debbie Baxter with Baxter Design Group happens to be one of them! We are truly delighted and honored today to have Debbie share some of her favorite spaces she's designed using color.

Born to Color

I was born to color.

My memories of a childhood in barren West Texas revolved around Crayola Crayons and, as I grew older, fashion magazines. I was undoubtedly drawn to bold color. Probably because the Texas plains are monochromatic dust beige, I craved a vivid punch of color and only knew to find it in those places or where my imagination took me. So, I grew up a fearless colorist. Still am! I find it has served me well these past 30 years of designing for others. I married young. We traveled & lived in Latin America, Spain, Miami, and Chicago for almost 2 decades. The influences of so many architectural styles and historical cultures had huge emotional impacts on me. Especially the collision of colors in both Latin America and Miami where color dominates and is a “given”. Today, I find myself managing a talented group of  young design professionals under our umbrella at Baxter Design Group ,where the process is the same, no matter what the scope or style of the project might be.  And color drives the process from the first imaginable moment. Here are some examples...

...

The initial purchase of the rainbow rug from THE RUG CO. set the stage for this white shell punched with color.

...

Gloss white kitchen cabinets received a citrus colored glass tile mosaic background….so it only seemed natural to punctuate the view into the wet bar with lime green lacquered cabinetry.  (All by Downsview Kitchens and Palmer Todd.)

...

This entire space was driven by the cutest gingham check wall covering on the inside backs of the built-in display cases.

...

Scisis ombre mosaic tile, floor to ceiling for a young girl's bath, was so perfectly accented with this glass raspberry basin.

...

And Art, especially the vintage piece shown here, is the absolute best place to be bold with color!

 ...

So don't be afraid to add that punch of color to a space. It creates an instant effect that will completely change the dynamic of the room!
