Zinc Door and GIVEAWAY!

We are wild about a new home furnishings site: ZINC DOOR!!!  The sister company to traditional and classically styled Layla Grayce, Zinc Door features a more modern and edgy look to home decor. But the differences don't stop there. In addition to showcasing an eclectically different selection of accessories and home goods, Zinc Door has invited several impressive and well-known tastemakers (bloggers, designers, editors and more) to serve as style spotters on their site. We had the opportunity to talk with Zinc Door as well as a few of their distinguished tastemakers to learn more about this fabulous company and their very cool products. Enjoy!

We love the uber-chic more traditional style of Layla Grayce. How did you decide to create a more modern e-commerce site (Zinc Door)?  Layla Grayce was born from a need for a specialized and high quality online boutique store targeted toward moms and children, and Zinc Door came to fruition by noticing a similar opportunity in the market. While Layla Grayce thrived with the more traditional consumer, we felt a desire to cater toward the modern shopper searching for a carefully curated collection of contemporary finds – unique pieces they won’t find in your everyday store. Once we got the idea in our heads, there was no looking back; this October will mark Zinc Door’s second anniversary – we feel so blessed that we’ve had such a positive response!
What do you think makes your business so successful?
We’re really ingrained with what’s happening in the industry, both in terms of interior, product and color trends as well as consumer. Our business is pleasing the customer; if we don’t know exactly what they want, we’ll instantly be forgotten. We also put the utmost care into creating inspiring, enjoyable and informed sites for our shoppers. It’s not just about the products you sell; it’s also about the experience.
We love how you are incorporating bloggers and tastemakers into your website. What inspired you to include such a fabulous group?

They inspired us! That’s the best thing about this industry; there is so much incredible talent, and you can’t help but look to each other for inspiration. Since we’re constantly following our favorite bloggers and tastemakers – looking to them for the latest finds and trends – we knew our customers would appreciate having their insight right at hand as well. Incorporating them into our website made perfect sense; we couldn’t be more thrilled to have such fantastic industry figures on board, inspiring both us and our customers every day.

Your tablescapes are amazing! Please name a few Zinc Door pieces you would use for a dinner party.

Thank you!  I wholeheartedly believe that food is only one piece of the dining experience.  Setting a beautiful table not only heightens the dining experience but sets the tone of the evening for your dining guests.  The visual cues designed into the table tell your guests what they will be experiencing throughout the night.

For a modern table, I am quite enamored with the Slanted Wine Chillers from Dwell Studio.  Since they are all glass, they provide a beautiful opportunity to do a unique centerpiece.  Place botanicals in the bottom of an ice tray and fill with water.  When the ice is added to the chillers, they create a visually stunning floating bouquet.

The Jasper Platter works beautifully in a more contemporary setting either as a cheese platter or bread plate.  If you wanted to put a twist on the platter, use it as a cake plate, by propping it atop a turned over glass vase.

These Lace Trim Placemats have almost a tribal feel to them even though they are printed with a lace pattern.  They could easily be dressed up for an urban tribal themed tablescape or dressed down with traditional china for a casual lunch setting.  Their versatility is why I am so smitten with them.

We love how you incorporate nature into your projects. What are a few Zinc Door furniture pieces that would complement plants/pots, etc.?

Food is nature and nature is food, so adding flowers and botanicals into my tablescapes makes sense to me.  I love repurposing vessels to house arrangements and find myself repeatedly turning to glassware as a substitute for vases.

I collect decanters because of their versatility.  They can be used for their intended purpose but I see this trio holding tightly clustered groupings of carnations mixed with billy balls.  I love carnations when grouped together as they provided huge impact for little cost.  The trick is either mix them with another flower or set in beautiful container like the Blythe Glass Decanter Set.

I shunned brass for years and now I can’t get enough.  The coloring of the Lazy Susan Gold Hammer Brass Bowl is the perfect compliment to green so I would immediate fill this with a miniature succulent and fill the remaining space with black lava or river rock.  It now makes the perfect modern miniature centerpiece that can be set at each place setting and given as a present.

How do you bring a touch of modern into Southern decor? List a couple of Zinc Door pieces that can help tie the two together.
For many years the south was hung up on Chintz, ornate wall coverings and heavy-handed interiors. As much as I love a beautiful traditional interior, we all know times are changing.  I am approached by many clients that are looking to replace some of their antiques for more modern, clean lined pieces.  This doesn't mean they are looking for a minimal stark interior, it just means they are looking to update to a transitional, well put together space that feels current.  A great way to update a living room is to add a new coffee table or change a wood stained bedside table to a colorful lacquer table.  If a client is looking to add a touch of new to bring their interior up to date, I like using a client's existing table but bringing in a new set of dining chairs to give the space a new life. The new chairs must compliment the style of their table but remember, it's okay if the finishes don't exactly match.

Name 3 of your favorite tables at Zinc Door and where would you place them?

I enjoy using lots of different table styles to enhance the upholstery pieces and create a common theme in the room.  The Malibu Loft 2 Drawer End Table is perfect to accent a simple sofa, and comes in multiple painted finishes.

The Worlds Away Jarmon Gold Leaf Side Table is ideal if you are looking to bring a feminine touch into a room, the gold finish with glass accents screams glamour.  Keep this in mind as a perfect bedside table or end table, depending on the height you need.

A favorite drink table I use often is the Riley Table by Oly Studio.  The simplistic shape can accent any style and the size is perfect for tight spaces.
