The Kitchen Nook

The Kitchen Nook has always been a fixture in our childhood memories. This spot was where all the action took place: family meetings, birthday celebrations, exam studying and more...it seemed as though the rest of the house not only paled in comparison but actually revolved around this one significantly smaller (but highly important) space.  Now with our own children, this is where watercoloring/playdough and sticker decorating happens, the afternoon snacks are devoured and the spelling test words are perfected. In essence-the breakfast nook could very well be argued as the heart of the home. So, it only makes perfect sense that a little aesthetic attention should be given to this deserving, tiny spot.  We are delighted today to have Charleston's Abney & Morton Interiors here with us to talk about the beloved kitchen nook. BACKGROUND: Abney & Morton Interiors create inviting rooms with striking elements of color, subtle sophistication and charm. Allison Abney originally started her career in accessories design with her company Allison Abney Handbags. She has always had an appreciation for vibrant vintage textiles mixed with a modern design sensibility. Boo Morton earned an associate degree in interior design from the New York School of Interior Design. She worked in New York before moving to San Francisco where she trained in floral design. She admires a calm interior with subtle pops of color and pattern and never shies away from a whimsical statement piece in a room. Together, they create interiors with beauty, balance and soul.

THE KITCHEN NOOK

The kitchen nook, tucked between windows or situated in a corner has many great uses. Whether it serves as a place for eating, kids' homework, or a casual family meal, this alcove offers a sense of intimacy to a busy kitchen. This multi-functioning space can be rustic or sophisticated; but should always be cozy. It is a place you never want to leave; a place you immediately go to in the morning, curling up with coffee to begin the day. The warmth and comfort of a banquette is so simple, yet so purposeful. Here are a few examples of one of our favorite spots in the home!

A bright sun filled kitchen nook in the Philip House condominium building, interiors designed by Victoria Hagan.

Amanda Peet's breakfast nook: casual and built for lounging complete with a L shaped banquette and Hans Wegner wishbone chairs.

...

A booth style kitchen nook...leather clad booth seating, bright and airy.

...

A Steven Gambrel designed kitchen nook that is designed cozily in a corner with pendant lighting and the window view as a focal point.

An L shaped banquette situated in a corner of the kitchen with a whimsical, playful stool. Heydt Designs created this interior with style while not taking the design so seriously.

...

We love the simplicity of this breakfast area. Simple ticking stripe banquette with cushions held up by hooks. The Stokke tripp trapp highchair has always been a favorite of ours...especially pulled up in this setting.

...

Nate Berkus designed this nook...striped banquette, plastic molded Eames chairs, Saarinen table, industrial stools. We love his contrast of dark and light, modern and vintage.

...

Breakfast nook...so serene. The pop of citrus on the cushions calmed by the blue/grey pillows and painted floors.

...

LuLu Dk's kitchen nook. She is one of our favorite textile designers and we use her fabrics a lot in our work. LuLu's twin boys in a cozy booth designed nook.

A cerused wood trestle table, with tailored fretwork chairs and a stripe banquette all contribute to the fresh and airy nook pictured here.

...

Loving this masculine and handsome kitchen nook.

...

Masculine, mature and sleek. This nook is sophisticated enough for dinner with friends. A U shape banquette not only allows for more seating; but invites conversation and intimacy.

...

Celerie Kemble designed kitchen nook...a pastel haven...so calm and serene. Again another Saarinen table and chairs complemented by the pale lavender leather cushions.
