Book Review - "Design & Decoration" by Martyn Lawrence Bullard

Martyn Lawrence Bullard is an enigma all to himself. No one single word can seem to describe this interior designer. But maybe that's how it should be, as his persona is as diverse as the projects he creates. Taking a look at his clientele list, that include the likes of Cher, Daisy Fuentes and Kid Rock, you'll quickly realize that he clearly has an impeccable knack of appealing to a wide variety of tastes, personalities and egos. (No easy feat for anyone!) In his latest book, "Design & Decoration," Martyn details several high profile projects he has recently curated across the globe. From Tommy and Dee Hilfiger's splashy pad in Miami to the regal Chateau Gutsch in Switzerland, the book wows the reader with color, detail and definition in the way that only Martyn Lawrence Bullard can.

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of hearing Martyn speak, while attending a design conference in Los Angeles. He had recently become a household name, due to being cast in the popular Bravo series, "Million Dollar Decorators." Although he had been known to the Hollywood elite for years, he was just breaking in to mainstream America. Martyn was the keynote speaker at the conference, and delivered a rousing presentation about his many design projects and the celebrity clients those projects included. For over an hour he described in detail every slide that he presented to us in the audience. From the fabric on the walls to the story behind a piece of furniture, his ability to recount information in a captivating way kept all of us at the edge of our seats. (And no, he had no notes for reference.) Furthermore, he was more than happy to share details about sources, paint colors, and more, as it was clear that he was comfortable enough in his own skin to feel flattered, rather than threatened, by others asking about specifics in his design. That comfortability is, what I believe, makes him so likable and so sought after by his many clients around the world.

"Design & Decoration" is a truly fascinating read. Even if you don't aesthetically identify with every single one of the projects shown, you will hold so much respect for the incredible originality and true craftsmanship that goes into each of the spaces he creates. From having a blue glass chandelier blown for added color in a dining room, to commissioning a living room's walls be hand stenciled OVER grasscloth, or covering walls in red-dyed bark paper and studding the corners to resemble aged leather (Seriously!), Martyn's ability to imagine beyond the predictable is shown time and time again.  Here are a few pictures to whet your appetite:
